Wow! The VFS blog made mention of some of our students in DD08!

It’s great to be able to post up my work from past terms, and current projects.. not only to share with other students, or prospective students, but also to track my own progress as a designer. It takes a lot, as a designer, to be able to look at your work and know when to stop. Sometimes you just want to keep going, adding things here, tweaking things there.. and with some of my past work, I can see where I’ve made those mistakes, and I now have a better understanding of when you just need to stand back for a while, and let things be.

A quick poster made for our class a couple of terms ago.

I can’t stress enough the importance of keeping all of your work, the good and the bad. The scraps, the scribbles, and the masterpieces.. they are all a part of the process which will not only teach you so much; but employers now want to see that you know how to go through the steps to create something truly amazing (so you can do it again, too!)

Moving on to today, we had a full day of creative meetings, and just spending some real important time to form a strong concept for our Motion Design class. This class is a new take on the motion design 4 elective as we’re split up into two teams. Each team has a teacher mentor/director and we’re creating music videos for real working artists in the industry. This is really exciting to me, as I never pegged myself as a Motion designer, and in this particular project, I don’t have to be. I find myself the most excited about the pre-production, the conceptualization of what this project needs to be; and I still have the chance to be a part of the rest of the music video, but I don’t have to worry about how good I am in After Effects, or manning the camera.

We’ve got a great team onboard, and we’ve already got so many great ideas being thrown around. Being the Digital Design program at VFS, we’ve gotten to know an online software called Project Path, which is a part of a company called Basecamp. It is a way for teams, or individuals to be able to track meetings, collaborate, and communicate in a really effective way online. We also used this on the Adobe Reel Ideas project. Get to know this, as it’s a great tool to have in your belt.

Our production is called “Lies” which was written and produced by Alan Wong-Moon, and also written and performed by Michelle Carter Leis. It’s a really fun song to get into, and working with Alan, who has had a creative vision for the song right from the get-go, is a real treat. On our team we also have Gill Decher, Asuka Kono, Peter McDonald, and Enrique Tejero. (Please check out their blogs as well!) We’ve got a solid team, solid song, and we’re ready to rock it out!

Looking forward to getting these projects on the go! More to come!
