For our term 4 Print and DVD authoring classes, we are creating a package for a movie of our choice.
The movie must be in the public domain - so we were instructed to goto www.archive.org and search around for some materials to work with there.archive.org. I chose Dick Tracy meets Gruesome.
I am going to include an interesting package design and dvd menu design that will be a sort of Collector’s edition design, a little more contemporary, but still true to the artwork of Chester Gould.
Here are some rough sketches I made during an outing to Victoria. My ideas for the print & packaging side of the project may be hard to execute but I think the concept matches quite well to the style of the original comic. I want to get a tin box to hold the DVD and would love to have it debossed and even have a die cut in the cover to reveal the DVD inside. The dvd authoring side of the project will be a comic book style approach. I don’t have this part in the sketch… but it would function like a comic strip. Each menu would move across the screen (fairly simple to do!) and back and forth as you navigate through the dvd. We’ll see how it turns out, as a lot of the success of this project is dependent on the quality of the assets.
